“With good fortune we can educate a large proportion of our better minds so that they are not ignorant of imaginative experience, both in the arts and in science, nor ignorant either of the endowments of applied science, of the remediable suffering of most of their fellow humans, and of the responsibilities which, once they are seen, cannot be denied.” |
The luncheon series is rooted in C. P. Snow's famous Rede Lecture of 1959, "The Two Cultures and the Scientific Revolution" in which he described a cultural divide between the natural sciences and the humanities.
Snow's thesis will be examined in its contemporary context and in its application to, and relevance for, Florida State University.
The first three luncheons will feature outstanding visiting speakers who are nationally recognized experts in their respective areas of interdisciplinary scholarship, one each from the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. The fourth luncheon will consist of a panel discussion by four Florida State University professors, who have a background and interest in interdisciplinary initiatives.
The central goal of the series is to explore methods for increasing communication across disciplines. This may lead to proposed curricular changes and greater opportunities for faculty dialog across the university.
All luncheons will be webcast live and also available as an archive. The links for these webcasts appear below. Each luncheon will also be televised by WFSU-TV on cable channel 4 several weeks after each event.
