What if I don’t know what Engineering major I want to be, is there a general one?
We do not have a general engineering major. What we recommend is choosing one, whichever one you are leaning towards right now, then you can always change later. Everyone is put in to a pre-something engineering major at first anyway, then once you have completed certain pre-requisites, you will be formally moved into the major. Also, Freshmen students and some lower-division transfers will take a course called “First-Year Engineering Lab.” This will introduce you to all the majors, you will hear from professionals in the field, and you will complete a project in each discipline. Usually at the end of this, students have a better idea of which discipline they prefer. For more information on the pre-engineering requirements, you may visit https://www.eng.famu.fsu.edu/pre-engineering-requirements.
Can I change my major to an Engineering major if I am a lower-division transfer student?
Possibly. You must be on track based off the number of terms you have been enrolled in college post high school graduation.
Can I be enrolled in another major as a freshman, such as Exploratory, and take the First Year Engineering Lab?
Yes. While we do recommend any freshmen interested in our majors be listed formally as Engineering, you may take the Engineering Lab as another major. To enroll in this course, email the Mapping Coordinator hdcampbell@eng.famu.fsu.edu from your FSU account with what section, date, and time of the class you prefer, and if there are seats available she will place you in the course. You may also have your current major advisor email the Mapping Coordinator with the above information.
Can I double major with two majors in the Engineering?
It is possible, but it depends on the majors you are interested in. For example, you cannot double major in Civil and Environmental Engineering. But most others you may be able to. This is not a decision to be entered in to lightly though. Engineering already has more credit-hour requirements than most programs on campus. Therefore, we recommend speaking with an advisor in the disciplines you plan to major in. They may suggest a Master’s depending on your intended career path.
Can I double major with another major outside of Engineering?
Since this involves two different colleges/departments, you would need approval from both Engineering and the other major to do so. Please note though, you cannot formally add a second major to your account until you have reached 60 hours and/or upper division status. That being said, if you decide to double major, make sure you let your primary advisor know so they make sure you take courses that apply to both programs. You may also start a conversation with the other major advisor to know what is required of you to be on track. For additional majors at FSU and their contact info, you may visit https://academic-guide.fsu.edu/.
Where can I see what courses are required for each major?
The best place to view this information is by going to https://www.eng.famu.fsu.edu/ and going through the various department websites. Most curriculum maps for the majors can be found on the individual department sites under their student header. You may also view sample schedules for each major on the Academic Guide https://academic-guide.fsu.edu/engineering-technology.
