Can I major in Social Work even if I’m not ready to start the BSW Program?
Yes. We have a Social Work NFA major which simply means “not formally admitted.” The benefit of majoring in Social Work NFA prior to applying to the BSW Program means you will receive appropriate advising for the BSW Program and receive emails with information regarding the BSW Program, upcoming deadlines, and opportunities in the college.
What makes me eligible for the BSW Program?
Students are eligible for the program when they have a 3.0 cumulative GPA, a B- or better in our five prerequisite courses (sociology, psychology, economics, biology, and American government), and ALL general education coursework complete with 60 earned hours. Students typically start the BSW Program at the beginning of their junior year. You can find additional information on the courses we accept for the five prerequisites and the layout of our program here: https://csw.fsu.edu/sites/g/files/upcbnu1131/files/Two-Year_Program_of_Study_-_AA_Transfer.pdf.
Do I have to apply to get into the BSW Program?
Yes. Our program is limited access which means students need to meet various requirements and then apply to be eligible for our major. However, our major is NOT limited enrollment. Meaning, we do not accept a limited number of applicants. If students meet our requirements and apply, they are eligible for the program.
Do you accept applicants every semester?
We accept applications for fall and spring semesters. The fall application is due June 1st and the spring application is due November 1st. Applications can be found on our website: https://csw.fsu.edu/academics/bachelor-social-work-bsw/admissions-information.
Can I double major with Social Work?
With most other majors, and if you decide to do so before your junior year, most likely. The BSW Program is a 50-hour major, leaving room in your schedule for another (smaller) major to pursue. If this is something you are interested in doing, you will need to let your advisor know early in your college career.
Do you have a Master’s Program?
Yes. Students who graduate with a BSW degree are eligible for the advanced standing MSW Program. This is a huge benefit as the advanced standing MSW Program can be completed in one year (full time) whereas the traditional MSW Program is two years (full time).
What careers are available to me with this major?
Careers with a social work degree are endless. Please refer to this sheet which details just some of the career opportunities available to you with a bachelor’s or master’s degree: https://career.fsu.edu/sites/g/files/upcbnu746/files/Social%20Work_1.pdf.
Does your major have study abroad opportunities?
Yes. Opportunities available to students in the BSW Program can be found here: https://csw.fsu.edu/academics/international-programs/csw-international-programs-overview
