College of Communication - FAQs for Changing Majors

How can I speak with an advisor from the College of Communication and Information?

If you have a quick question about policy or something, you can contact the advising office over email at advising@cci.fsu.edu and we can answer your question. If you would like to discuss your schedule, classes, major changes or have an in-depth conversation about your goals and planning ahead you should schedule an advising appointment. This is done with Campus Connect (the "CC" icon after logging into your myFSU account).

How often should I see my advisor?

It is recommended that you set up an appointment with your advisor about once a semester, but not only to review your schedule and academic progress or when you are struggling. Your advisor can help you explore many opportunities for engagement and support that can enrich your college experience.  Also contact your advisor when you have questions or concerns about your academic progress or major changes.  FSU has many resources in place to support your growth ab development, your advisor can help you take advantage of them.

With your limited access programs, what happens if I apply to my major and do not get accepted?

If you are not accepted to your major, you will unfortunately need to change your major. We advise all students to do something we call "parallel planning.” We will basically have you work toward two different programs simultaneously prior to getting accepted into your major. Not only will this benefit you if you need to change your major, but most of our programs require the completion of a minor. By parallel planning, you can make progress toward your major and minor at the same time. This is even useful if you decide to change your major later (regardless of admission status) because you would have worked toward a minor or certificate in the meantime.

Can I apply for more than one major at the same time in case I do not get accepted into a limited access major?

Yes, you can, if the two majors are not in the same department (for instance, you can apply for Public Relations and Sport Management since they are from different departments). If you apply to two Communication majors, the committee will only look at your most recent application. It is recommended that you have an alternative plan in case you do not get admitted to your first choice.  Discuss this with your advisor as there may be more than one major that can prepare you for your next step after graduation, whether that be graduate school or a career.

Are there any prerequisites for a communication major?

Programs within the School of Communication (Media Communication Studies, Digital Media Production, Advertising, and Public Relations) require 52 completed hours to include 2 college level math courses and 2 college level English Composition courses. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required to apply, but admissions are competitive and meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance. There are also other application requirements (portfolio) for some of the Communication majors, so students should speak with an advisor prior to applying.

The Communication Science & Disorders major requires 52 credits completed to include all Liberal Studies requirements and ASHA Standards. ASHA Standards can overlap with Liberal Studies requirements and include Biological Science, Physical Science (Physics or Chemistry), Statistics, and a Behavioral Science (most common is Psychology). A minimum GPA of 3.0 is also required to apply, but admissions for this program are also competitive and meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance.

What happens if I do not get into my preferred major within the School of Communication?

Advertising, Public Relations, or Digital Media Production all require supplemental materials (portfolio) as part of admission; Media Communication Studies does not. If the major you are applying for requires supplemental materials, you can elect Media Communication Studies as a backup option if not admitted to your first choice. We also encourage students to have a parallel major in mind if you do not get into a major in the School of Communication.

How do I apply for a limited access program in the College of Communication and Information?

All applications are due on the first business day of February every year by 5 PM Eastern Time. Every program has a different application and requirements, and these sometimes change every year. Please refer to the respective department's website for application requirements.
