Interior Architecture & Design

FSU’s Interior Architecture and Design department is ranked in the top 20 undergraduate programs in North America. We can boast a 98% job placement rate within 6 months of graduation.

What does it take to be admitted to the Interior Architecture & Design program?

  • Interior Architecture & Design is a 4-year program. After taking 3 required courses in Year 1, students submit a portfolio, meet the overall GPA requirement (3.0), and apply for formal acceptance into the major. A student’s work ethic, attention to detail, ability to think critically, class attendance, and attitude are all considered when applying for formal acceptance.

  • There is currently a waiting list to begin this major in Fall 2020. Interested students must contact Prof. Amy O’Keefe (aokeefe@fsu.edu) to request to be added to the waiting list.

  • At the time of academic advising during new student Orientation, students will be informed as to whether they can begin required first-year classes in Fall 2020, Spring 2021, or Summer 2021. At this time, we do not anticipate a delay in 4-year graduation due to the term that first-year classes are able to be started.

  • Because Interior Architecture & Design is a limited-access major, first-year students are advised to stay on track for a parallel plan (backup major). More information on all of the majors that FSU offers can be found in the Academic Program Guide.

Can I double major as an Interior Architecture & Design major?

  • Due to the rigorous curriculum and high number of required credit hours in this major, Interior Architecture & Design majors cannot double major. However, taking elective courses or completing a minor, if desired, is possible. Your academic advisor can help you work elective courses into your schedule.

What is the difference between a BA and a BFA in Studio Art?

Bachelor of Arts (BA)

  • The BA in Studio Art is a fundamental liberal arts program that enables students to cross cultural and disciplinary boundaries while cultivating critical, creative, and independent thinkers. It seeks to provide students with training in the visual arts and to combine this with skills in other disciplines that prepare them for the workplace.

  • The BA Studio Art degree requires 21 hours in studio art and 9 hours in art history as well as proficiency in a foreign language at the intermediate level.

  • No portfolio review is required for admission.

  • The BA is a great choice for students seeking double majors.

Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA)

  • The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Studio Art seeks to develop in students an informed personal vision, a high level of competence in technique, the ability to apply critical and reflective skills to their practice and in their research, and the ability to make sound artistic decisions within the appropriate contextual and cultural arena. Students are allocated a personal studio in which they experiment and develop techniques and processes to create individual art practices. This is a great choice for students who want to have a career as an artist.

  • The BFA requires 52 hours in studio art and 12 hours in art history.

  • Acceptance into the BFA in Studio Art is gained through an application and selection process which includes submission of a portfolio and artist statement and meeting overall and major GPA requirements.

  • Interested in graphic design? Students in the Studio Art major learn about design while making art and can take elective courses outside of the major to gain additional skills in communications, business, and more.
